Your Side Hustle Questions Answered

Do I need to tell HMRC about my side hustle?
If your side income is £1,000 or less in a tax year, the trading allowance usually covers it. Above that, you'll normally need to register for Self Assessment.

Will HMRC know about my online sales?
Yes. Online platforms now report sellers to HMRC once they make 30 or more sales, or earn about £1,700 or more, in a year.

What expenses can I claim?
Costs you have wholly and exclusively for your business, such as equipment, software, a share of your home costs, travel and marketing.

Does Making Tax Digital affect me?
From April 2026 it applies if your self-employed and property income is over £50,000. This drops to £30,000 from April 2027 and £20,000 from April 2028.
